Hi.
It’s me, Sara. As I’ve said before, I don’t do those fancy bios. So sue me.
Kaleidoscope Heart is my new album, and I’m beyond proud of this collection of songs, in no small part due to the fact it was like pulling teeth to write them.
We spent the better part of three years touring and supporting my first record, Little Voice, and by the end of that process I was completely burnt out. Don’t get me wrong, it was an unbelievable ride that far surpassed my expectations in the best way. We had some unforgettable high points as well as some very humbling low ones, and like any good rollercoaster, it’s exhilarating but you still feel a little bit sick at the end and are happy to have your feet on the ground again.
I thought that I would use our much-needed time off to just pour myself into writing, but I actually found that I wanted nothing to do with music for a little while. I preferred drinking copious amounts of coffee, going to yoga, and looking for cute throw pillows at Target. I love throw pillows. As the time passed, I slowly started writing again, and truly amazed myself with just how horrible the songs were. And then the fear set in. I think I fell victim to what a lot of artists go through with a second record: the expectations, the pressure, the anxiety of what’s to come, the idea that maybe I’ve already written my best work…
Weeks before I was supposed to start recording, I was in full-scale panic-attack mode, feeling pressure to start the ball rolling again, but not having material I cared about. I only had about 4 new songs that I really loved, and the rest were truly embarrassing. Thankfully, over a margarita, my good friend Matt said something profound and poetic that made it all come clear:
He said, “You can’t polish a turd. A bad song is a bad song. Ask for more time.”
And so I did.
My manager suggested only recording the 4 songs I loved and I agreed. Thank God he did, because the floodgates opened after a taste of what being in the studio would look and feel like. It was easy, and exciting, and infinitely inspiring. I wrote the rest of the record in about a month, largely based around the song “Uncharted” that still feels like the centerpiece to me. My fear of what was to come was keeping me from doing anything. And finally, I cared about what I was saying.
As homage to the song that freed me, I took the title of the record from its lyrics.
My counterpart in the studio, Neal Avron, is one of my Buddhas in this world. He’s one of the most patient, musical, kind, and dedicated people I’ve ever met. We were an odd pairing for sure, as he’s best known for his rock records (Fall Out Boy, Say Anything), and I do covers of songs from Dumbo and love the Golden Girls. But it was exciting and felt completely right. We spent about 6 months making this record, and the record that came from it is exactly what I wanted. With Neal’s help, I took risks, and pushed myself both as a player and vocally, and I followed my gut wholeheartedly for the very first time. And I can’t wait to share it.
I can’t wait to see these songs come to life.
I can’t wait to reconnect with fans from the stage. I can’t wait to see how many times the word “Kaleidoscope” gets misspelled.
I can’t wait to get on the ride again.

| Rock Camp Scholarship | |
|
Hi all! You ready? Get set. Go! This summer some of my closest friends are launching the first ever ROCK N' ROLL CAMP FOR GIRLS, LOS ANGELES!! I am a huge supporter of this camp and am offering a scholarship opportunity to 5 lucky girls in the LA area who want to participate in what I believe to be one of the most worthwhile and exciting opportunities around this summer. This is for young women who want to explore what being a musician feels like... no prior musical experience necessary. They are simply providing a safe space to come and play. Literally. These amps go to eleven. The first Rock n' Roll Camp for Girls started in Portland, Oregon several years ago, and has since inspired hundreds of people to launch Girls Rock Camps in cities all over the world. This camp is all about promoting self-esteem and empowerment in young women, with music as the medium. Girls get to pick an instrument, create a band, write a song, learn to play and perform it, sing, yell, and just generally be encouraged to express themselves creatively. As if that weren't enough, all the bands get the incredible opportunity at the end of the week to give a real live concert in front of friends and family at the WORLD FAMOUS TROUBADOUR!! Oh Em Gee. When I was growing up, I spent a lot of time worrying about fitting in, because I didn't want anyone to ridicule me for being different. Unfortunately I think a lot of young women can relate to that. This camp is designed to acknowledge that our individuality is incredibly precious, and should be nurtured and celebrated. It's what makes you, YOU. I think that rocks. The camp details are below, as well as the website, so check them out and see if this is something that speaks to you, your sister, your daughter, your friend, whatever...and if you decide you want to be a part of it there are two options: 1. You enroll at http://rockcampforgirlsla.org because you can, and you don't want to miss this opportunity. Please visit this website for all details on the program.OR 2. You apply for this scholarship! Once you have the video, send it to girlsrockcampscholarship@gmail.com Along with an email that includes 1. your name 2. your age 3. your parent's name and contact info: email and phone number 4. your mailing address Camp dates are July 26-July 30 from 9am to 5pm, with the showcase at the Troubadour on Saturday, the 31st. This is NOT an overnight camp. Campers must be able to provide their own transportation to and from camp each day. Rules for the Scholarship Eligibility: 1. You must be a girl. Sorry, dudes. 2. You must be between the ages of 8 and 17, no if, ands, or buts. 3. Video must be less than 3 min long, and must feature the potential participant. 4. Must live in the LA area 5. SUBMISSIONS MUST BE RECEIVED ON OR BEFORE JULY 1ST Although I will not be there this year, I give my full endorsement to this organization and completely believe in the fact that this will be an unforgettable experience! Good luck! Love, Sara |

| Gonna Get Over You | |
|
I wrote the chorus to this song years ago and always loved singing it, but never really felt like I had the write song to put around it. After such a rocky start, this song was the FIRST completed song that I knew would go on my second record. So... it's kinda like the grandaddy of the rest of Kaleidoscope Heart, if you will. Or if you won't, that's okay too. I ain't mad at ya. It took us two complete stabs at this little diddy to get it right, but I feel like we finally captured the essence of the song which was meant to be sort of vintage 50's doo wop feel with a modern twist. Think Roy Orbison in a Hummer. But different. xo sara |
|
| I'm officially announcing the name of the Record! | |
|
(drumroll, please.) It's called: "Kaleidoscope Heart" (roaring applause and ooohs and aaahs like the audience is looking at a floating pink elephant that speaks Portuguese, please.) I picked out the name of the record months before I even finished writing the songs. I love the imagery of those words, and they're really representative of how I envision my heart. It's a colorful but fragmented, ever-changing sum of all the bits and pieces that make it up. A Kaleidoscope is the tool that helps make sense of the mess. Or at least makes it nice to look at. :) More importantly I named this record "Kaleidoscope Heart" because, like my last name, people will misspell the sh*t out of it. There's beauty in that. Or at least I remain mildly amused by it. I hope you like it.... xoxo sara |

| Watch Sara's Second Webisode | |
|
"Uncharted" This song saved me in a way. This was the one that finally helped me break through my writer's block. At the suggestion of my friend, Eric Rosse (who produced Little Voice) I turned all my pain and worry and fear into something that made sense. And this song came out, and the flood gates opened for the rest of the record. On a side note, this is also my dad's favorite song on the record. He's already decided that he wants me to play this on a really big stage and have a whole orchestra on stage while I walk around the audience and point at things emphatically. I told him I'd work on that. Hope you like it. |

Hey you. Yes, you. I HAVE BIG NEWS!!!! My first single from my new record is shipping out to radio stations today!!! It's called KING OF ANYTHING and it's about Zach Galifianakis. Just kidding. It's not called King of Anything. Just kidding. It is. Zach, call me. We have a lot to discuss. Click here to listen at AOL Music. Keep an ear out for the song on your local radio station (fingers crossed!), and if you want to paint pictures of me and send them into the stations to show your support that would be cool too. Or, if you want to spell my name in Sour Skittles or lentils and take pictures of that and send the picture in to the stations, they seem to love that as well. I don't know why, they just do. I'm beyond excited to share the first taste of the new record. I've been in the studio for the past 7 months or so, working hard on the next batch of songs. It has shaped up to be something I'm so incredibly proud of. The album is called Kaleidoscope Heart, and will be available late this summer! (insert happy Sara scream here.) But don't worry (those of you who worry) we'll be hitting the road hard this summer and there will be lots of chances to see and hear the new music! The band and I are so ready to join forces again and come play for you. Keep checking the website for updates on where to find us and the music. AND.... as if that wasn't enough.....two more dates have been announced for the Lilith Fair Tour!! I seriously keep pinching myself that I get to be a part of this, but there are now more tickets available for you guys. | Sara Bareilles Set To Release First Single, "King of Anything" Off Forthcoming New Album | |
|
Epic Records recording artist, Sara Bareilles is pleased to announce the release of, "King Of Anything" the highly anticipated first single off her forthcoming sophomore album. "King Of Anything" which Sara wrote, was recorded in Los Angeles and produced by the renowned Neal Avron. The immensely addictive and charismatic pop driven track featuring Sara's extraordinary vocal prowess is set to hit airwaves May 10 and will kick off the official countdown to the untitled album's September release. "'King of Anything' is sort of a 'f*ck you' song," jokes Sara Bareilles. "I've had more unsolicited advice on my life than I care to mention, and this was how I dealt with it. It felt empowering to turn that frustration into music, especially a song that doesn't even sound angry. That's sort of what "Love Song" was as well. Apparently, I don't get over things very quickly." The single's release marks the first taste of new material following the massive success of Sara's debut album, Little Voice from which Sara received two Grammy nominations for her triple platinum selling hit single, "Love Song." The track enjoyed an astonishing 13 weeks in the Top 10 at pop radio, while the album has sold over 1 million copies worldwide, won accolades from press critics at places like Rolling Stone and the New York Times, and catapulted Sara to become one of the most interesting and promising new artists of 2009. |
