Almost V Day
Wow. Do NOT go look up St. Valentine. There's a whole mess of facts and people and disjointed stories that I can't make sense of. Booooooring.
I will admit that I don't know the story of St. Valentine but i THOUGHT that I did. And what I thought i knew as fact was kind of a nice little story. So, i'll go ahead and disseminate false truth as long as you agree to remember that I'm kind of making this up from a half memory that I thought I heard on the History Channel. :)

St. Valentine's Day: by Sara Bareilles (and the history channel of my mind)

once upon a time there was terrible unrest in a faraway land. (History Channel ALWAYS talks about faraway lands.) A tyrannical King was being an a**hole and told everybody that they couldn't get married anymore. (he might have said something like, "I decree that there will be no more marriages until.....blah blah blah.") I don't know what he was so pissed off about. But he said he would kill any priest who married people, and the people who tried to get married. Sucks for them.
Among those people was one (ta-daaaah!) ST. VALENTINE. Who decided that in the name of love he would continue to marry people and uphold the value of two souls finding each other. And so he did. And then everyone in the kingdom was happy again and the King ran away and a good kind Queen took over. Yay for that.

the end.

*this is completely made-up. get over it.

What i do appreciate about V day is that it acknowledges love. And there is nothing in this world more worthy of acknowledgment. I just have to say that I've been reading tons of messages and emails from so many of you and it just warms my heart. It makes me smile and laugh and tear up and think about how cool people can be. I don't get a chance to write back to everyone, but please know that your love does come through and I am so lucky to receive it. So thank you for that, and I'm sending it right back at cha. Along with some really bad history lessons.

Happy Valentine's Day.
Heart you all.

"St. V-Day Will NOT Suck"
by Jimmy Kennan

Yo yo yo...

Sara, this morning, I discovered a rather disheartening comment posted to one of my videos on YouTube. It's a video of me simply drumming along with Paul McCartney & Wings' "Silly Love Songs".

Without revealing too many gruesome intricacies, the commenter basically called me an old, fat, truck-driving, human click-track. Bear in mind that I was merely 3 when that song was released as a single in 1976.

So I ask you, and whomever else cares to read this lamentation...

WWSBD?

While you contemplate a response, here was mine: I took a deep breath, put down the chainsaw, and simply told him that he was wrong. I'm a BUS driver. :)

Now, if you'll excuse me, I must tend to my fiancee's V-Day surprise. Roses, indoor picnic, her favorite movie, her favorite pasta and sugar-free candy, and a clean apartment!

(Think I got a shot? hehe)

Thank you again for the great music, Sara. HAPPY FREAKIN' V-DAY!!! :D

Hi there! I'm a high school band director in lower Alabama, and my students and I absolutely love you and your music. We crank up your cd as much as possible. Whenever the kids aren't in the bandroom, I am constantly singing and playing Love Song on the piano. I think some of my kids caught me because today after school, 4 of them came up to me desperate for my attention because they had something to play for me. Sure enough, on a bassoon, saxophone, clarinet, and flute they busted out with Love Song. Where is a video camera when you need one? Haha. It was great.

Take care!

S-

Your music is so much fun. My girls (twin 5yr olds) and I get up everytime it comes on the radio and sometimes almost tip our little car over dancing and bopping along with you.

Seriously, your voice is such a refreshing blast across the airwaves, that I'm tempted to roll down the windows and sing along, out loud every time I hear it and even though its twenty degrees out here in Colorado.

Loved the concert too!

Yours,

Cicily

PS: I'm not only a mommy but an interviewer for Art Nouveau Magazine and if your ever in the mood to do yet another interview...and I promise I won't eat chicken while I talk or listen to you.. about what makes you so fantastically delicious in the tired and overly processed music world, then email me anytime!

you CRACK me up! it is nice to know that you have a great personality to back up your music, which is also great. and your references to the golden girls... the QUEENS of television... thank you. i love reading your blogs and just stumbled on them recently after doing some "research" on you for my students... and me. i am constantly thumping out "love song" and making a sad, sad attempt to sing along. HIDEOUS! i really would love to buy a piano book of your favorite pieces. please post if one comes out. fairy tale is my new favorite. for today. tomorrow i will find another. even though you are super busy... i think you should blog more! i find myself reading quotes from your blogs aloud to my friends...
if you do read the preceeding foolishness, thank you. if not, glad you didn't waste your time.

best of luck!

Hey Sara! Can I just say that because of you I have to relive the fact that I was the first proto-type kid to my parents and as a part of their sad experimentations, I wasn't made to stick with piano. Now that I'm 22, and an ex-band geek I find myself plincking around on the keyboard trying to pick out the notes for "Love Song" (which is-not be redundant-but an amazingly, amazing song!). I'm thankful that the base of the song is pretty simple, making me feel at least somewhat adequate...lol. But anywho it's pretty refreshing to hear real music from a real person. You officially have a place next to John Mayer (my future hubs ha!) in my heart. Can't wait for you to head over to NC. If you're ever in the Charlotte Douglas Airport in NC stop by and holla-it would absolutely make my day :D. Keep up the awesomeness!

Oh my God, Sara Bareilles, I adore you. And I don't even know you. If you think about it, that's kind of creepy, but in a nice, loving sort of way... And isn't that what we all need? Just a little more love? Reading these journal entries makes my day. You're so... rad. Yeah, that's the word. I'll resurrect it just for you. :)

Anyway, have a great tour, and I'll be seeing you at a hotel cafe show!! (Which I'm so utterly stoked for that words can't even describe...)

Later, your radness. :)

So it was a crazy morning with my 1 and 2 year olds (yea, I know...but I'm not Brittney Spears...lol) when I heard your voice in the background on a commercial. That's all it took for me to look up the rest of your songs and realize that you've got it made. Seriously, congrats. I'm bummed beyond belief that you're in St. Louis tonight (I also feel sorry for you...don't you love the weather?!) but tickets have been sold out...and something tells me showing up with my double baby jogger tonight probably won't help my case (but I thought about it!) Your voice- amazing. Your songs- incredible. Somehow you've gotten into my diary because your songs hit every note with me.

But anyways, keeping this short (or shorter as I could go on) your stuff is great- I'm a loyal fan. I tend to go towards Joni Mitchell, Tori Amos, etc. and you've got that plus so much more wrapped up in a nice package.

Good luck tonight. Wish I could be there as I'm sure it will be awesome. Love your attitude and bio; very real. Keep up the great work- I can't wait for more songs!!

Hey Sara!

My wife and I went to your concert in Provo on Saturday. It was incredible. Thank you especially for your story about how you wrote Love Song, it had a pretty profound affect on me in a few areas of my life.

If you're interested, I wrote a review of the concert on my blog this morning.

You have to come back to Salt Lake City soon - and might I suggest "The Depot" - It bigger than Velour, but still has that intimate feel!

Its funny, how you can turn from being totally normal one day, to having millions of die hard fans worship the ground you stand on. Ahh the life. I bet it changes your whole perspective on things.i know it would make me crazy, in a good way though. Well i wouldn't exactly consider myself worshiping the ground, but i do listen to your music every day and i have honestly never heard anything like it. Its really funky and bluesy and so fun to play and sing.

My sister and i bought the sheet music for your cd and are trying to learn all of the songs, we want to cover them, my voice and yours are REALLY similar, so it sounds pretty much badass. We blast your CD in my work every day, and sing it LOUD until we see a customer coming, then we turn it down really quickly and right back up after they leave Haha.

This is such a feeble attempt at trying to contact you, but i really admire your music and lyrics. The way you put your songs together is mind blowing.i try but it ends pretty rough sounding and most of the time, really mediocre. Then again, i dont really try THAT hard.

well i bet you read a million messages of people babbling day in and day out, If only you could respond to every fan, i bet it gets overwhealming the amount of messages that you get. You do better than most at keeping your fans updated though. Kudos to that.
weeelllll, i really hope that one day you can come to Seattle, Washington. Id LOVE to go to a show, you are WAY good enough to headline, and you really should. Youll recognize me, just look for the crazy one in the front row singing all of the words to all of your songs, thatll be me. im sure that really narrows it down.

I wish you all the best in this craziness that you live in!
i bet its a BlAST!
Ill do my best to get to the top like you are, im just a small town girl with a normal dorky job, hoping that one day i can make it like you did!
In that case, you might be seeing me =]

Good luck Sara, Keep the music comin!

So... about you being awesome... YES> next topic.

As a former history major at an utterly prestigious University (Shippensburg U) ... (yeah, i don't know where it is either) I just wanted to let you know that your interpretation of the St. V story is eerily accurate.

... or not. What the heck do I know, I'm a Politics student. If St. V ever ran for public office I might be better informed.

Just wanted to say that I heard Gravity on Army Wives and nearly fell over. I was texting everyone! the song was AWESOME on the show and they should have used it more, but that is just my humble opinion.

Keep up the fab shows (come back to philly.... again :D) I'm trying to make it to Hershey... work may get me, but I'm tryin'.
